"Daily Blessings" from Mother Lois
From the Church Newsletter - July/August 2006
A couple of months ago, I went down to Maryland to visit with two
dear friends from one of my former congregations. They are older
folks, and struggling with some serious health issues. I try to
drive them around for errands and some fun trips to perk up their
days for a little while. In the end, it's quite therapeutic for
all three of us!
One of the mornings I was there, we went to the little local Post
Office to check their mail box. I waited in the car, so we wouldn't
have to roll the windows up and come back to a hot car. It's a quaint
little spot, with small historic buildings and a little park that
was put in a few years ago to spruce up this part of the town. As
I faced the park, I was suddenly captivated by the mass of little
maple pods which were swirling and whirling all around the car and
inside the park. Some of you may remember, as I did, calling them
little airplanes or helicopters as children - and they were just
as delightful to watch as ever.
Think about it for a moment. These are just little winged pods
which surround a seed which falls every spring from the mighty trees.
They could just as easily fall straight down to the ground like
other tree particles, but they don't. Instead, for one glorious
bit of time, they swirl and twirl and dance around the air in a
delightful flight of fancy, for no apparent reason except that God
has designed them that way.
There are all sorts of magical moments surrounding us each and
every day, as God's way of telling us to lighten up for a moment
and smile with the joy of life. And as the Scriptures remind us,
if God can so design such glorious moments for a tiny seed pod or
a simple wildflower, how much more so does God's love create in
us the capacity to shine and dance and twirl around in our own daily
lives. The summer months are great opportunities for us to relax
a little while, to visit with friends and family members, and to
enjoy the great beauty of God's creation. It's also a time for refreshment
and renewal in our spiritual lives. Ask yourself whether you've
taken time for your own moments of glory - and if not, maybe you
could take this time to renew the dance God empowers us to experience.
Blessings,
The Rev. Lois J. Schembs, Rector
